Melbourne's vibrant culinary scene is known for its diverse range of dining experiences, and Gimlet stands out as a destination that seamlessly blends sophistication, ambiance, and exceptional cuisine. Located in the heart of the city, Gimlet offers a memorable dining experience that combines classic elegance with contemporary flair. I’ll delve into the exquisite dining experience at Gimlet, exploring its culinary offerings, vibe, and the reasons why I think it’s a must-visit restaurant in Melbourne.
An Opulent Setting:
As you step into Gimlet, you'll be greeted by an atmosphere that exudes timeless elegance. The restaurant boasts a stylish interior with a mix of plush velvet seating, marble accents, and warm lighting, creating a refined and intimate ambiance. The attention to detail in the decor reflects the commitment to providing a luxurious dining experience.
Led by renowned chef Andrew McConnell, who also owns other incredible restaurants; (Supernormal, Cummulus Inc, Marion, Cutler & Co, and the Builder’s Arms), Gimlet’s menu showcases a fusion of traditional and contemporary flavors with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. The menu evolves with the seasons, ensuring the freshest and most vibrant flavors are highlighted for each dish. From the moment you peruse the menu, you'll discover an array of tantalizing options that cater to a range of tastes and preferences.
We started with delectable freshly shucked oysters with seaweed butter, smoked tuna & pickled mussel, Risotto al limone, pine mushrooms, black truffle butter and Wood-roasted potato with sour cream and mustard seeds. To compliment our dishes we tried a selection of expertly crafted cocktails. I enjoyed the refreshing citrus notes of “The Gimlet” and “New Mexico”. If you’re undecided on a drink, the experienced and helpful staff will help you select a cocktail best suited to your taste.
For the main course, we enjoyed baby beetroots, crème fraîche, horseradish, smoked salmon roe, Pipe rigate, blue swimmer crab, chilli and fennel, Cavendish House salad, flavoursome Wood-fired forequarter of Margra lamb, Jerusalem artichoke, cumin and mint, and finally a perfectly cooked Blackmore wagyu sirloin.
Although every dish was delicious and flavoursome, the Blue swimmer crab and Wagyu were standout meals that I can highly recommend.
To conclude our Gimlet experience we enjoyed a delicate yet rich Chocolate and amaretto tart with preserved cherries. This dessert had a velvety soft texture without being too sweet. The balance of flavours was perfect.
At Gimlet, the dining experience is elevated by the attentive and knowledgeable staff who guide you through your culinary journey.
